Can You Get DJI Care Refresh on a Used Drone?

Short Answer: Yes, But There Are Catches

The good news is that DJI does allow DJI Care Refresh to be added to a used drone in many cases. The catches are the ones that matter, so it pays to know them before you hand over money for a second-hand aircraft.

Care Refresh Belongs to the Buyer, Not the Drone

The first thing to understand is that a Care Refresh plan does not transfer with the sale. The plan is tied to the account of the person who purchased it and to the drone's serial number. If the seller bought two years of coverage and still has a year left, that remaining coverage stays with them. You, as the new owner, cannot take it over. Some sellers cancel their plan after the sale for a partial refund, so if active coverage is part of your purchase negotiation, get the terms in writing before you pay.

When You Can Add a Plan to a Used Drone

If there is no active Care Refresh plan on that serial number, you can generally purchase a new plan for the aircraft. DJI's system checks the serial number, so the same drone cannot carry two overlapping plans. In practice there are two paths:

• If the drone was activated very recently, you can often add coverage right away within DJI's post-activation window.
• If the drone is older, DJI can request a short verification video showing the aircraft powering on and functioning normally. Record a clean clip of the gimbal doing its startup dance with a view of the app showing the correct serial number, and most verification requests go through without a fuss.

The exact rules shift over time and by region, so treat the video-verification path as the reliable route for anything that has been out of the box for more than a couple of days.

What to Ask the Seller For

Before buying a used DJI drone, ask for three screenshots:

• The Care Refresh status page for the aircraft, showing whether a plan is active and how many replacement claims remain.
• The activation date and total flight hours from the app.

If a plan is active with claims remaining, that has real value. Factor it into your offer, since a transfer of benefits to you is not possible.

Coverage Only Matters if the Drone Is Legit

Care Refresh is a service, not a title check. It will not save you from a stolen drone, a blacklisted serial, or a locked account.
