A single worn propeller, a puffed battery, or a skipped firmware update can turn a routine flight into a flyaway or a hard landing.
Consistent maintenance does three things: it extends the life of your aircraft, it prevents the most common causes of crashes, and it preserves resale value. Battery care — the #1 cost saver
Lithium-polymer (LiPo) batteries are the single most expensive consumable on a drone and the most common cause of in-flight failures. Treat them right and a pack lasts 200+ cycles; neglect them and you'll be replacing them at $100+ a pop within a season.
Never drain to zero
Land with at least 15–20% charge. Deep discharging a LiPo below 3.0V/cell permanently damages the pack and shortens its lifespan.
Store at storage voltage
For long-term storage (over 2 weeks), bring each cell to ~3.8V (about 40–50% charge). Most modern chargers have a 'storage' mode.
Cool before charging
Never charge a battery that's still warm from flying. Let it cool to room temperature first — charging a hot pack accelerates degradation and risks fire.
Rotate your packs
If you own multiple batteries, rotate through them so each gets used and charged evenly. A pack that sits unused for months degrades faster than one flown weekly.
Watch the cycle count
Most LiPo packs are rated for 200–500 cycles. Track your cycle count and retire packs before capacity drops below 80% of new — visible as noticeably shorter flight times.
Never charge unattended
LiPo fires are rare but fast and intense. Charge on a non-flammable surface, ideally in a LiPo-safe bag, and never leave the room while a pack is charging.
Puffed or swollen batteries are done. Never charge or fly a battery whose cell has ballooned — it's a fire risk. Dispose of it at a battery recycling center, never in household trash.
Pre-flight & post-flight checklists
Before every flight
- Check airspace and weather — wind, visibility, and any active restrictions
- Inspect propellers for damage and confirm they're seated and locked
- Verify battery is fully charged, not puffed, and seated correctly
- Power on the drone and controller, confirm GPS lock (7+ satellites)
- Set Return-to-Home altitude above nearby obstacles
- Confirm camera and gimbal respond to commands
- Clear the launch area of people and obstacles
After every flight
- Let motors cool before handling — they run hot
- Inspect propellers and airframe for new damage

Inspecting a used drone before you buy

Ask the seller for the flight log or DJI Flight Records. Cross-check the disclosed flight hours against what the log shows — discrepancies are a red flag.

Inspect propellers and motors
Spin each motor by hand — it should turn smoothly with no grinding or resistance. Look for hairline cracks at the propeller roots and replace any suspect blades before flying.

Check battery health
Ask for the battery cycle count (visible in the manufacturer's app). A pack over 150 cycles or one that's visibly puffed is near end-of-life — factor a replacement into your offer.

Test the gimbal and camera
Power on and run the gimbal through its full range. Listen for grinding, check for drift, and take a test photo to confirm the camera sensor and lens are clean and functional.

Confirm firmware and ownership
Make sure the drone isn't activation-locked to the seller's account and that firmware is current. A drone stuck on an old firmware version or locked to a region can be bricked.

Review crash and repair history

Seasonal & long-term storage
